Newborn Session Prep

Congrats on the arrival of your sweet baby!!!  Your newborn session is scheduled to be at the studio in Xenia. Address and parking info is below.

We wanted to share some helpful information to ensure a smooth session and a beautiful finished product. Please take a moment to read over these tips and if you have questions, let us know.

DETAILS:

  • SESSION LENGTH: 2 HOURS: A typical full newborn session lasts about 2 hours. So they are lengthy! But worth it! There will be lots of feedings and diaper changes. So be sure to plan for that with plenty of bottles (if bottle feeding) and diapers/wipes. We will begin with parent/family shots before moving on to shots of baby alone.

  • WHO: We ask that ONLY baby's parents (& siblings)  attend the session. Our space is cozy and too much commotion interfere with the session work flow.

  • TEMPERATURE: The studio will be warm, usually about 80 degrees to keep baby sleepy and comfortable. So dress in layers so that you can stay comfortable as well.

  • WE'RE READY FOR YOU: We will have drinks and light snacks for you. Most new parents barely have time to get dressed, let alone feed themselves in the early days. We will take care of you! Please let us know of any food allergies prior to your session.

  • STUDIO ADDRESS:  1226 North Monroe Dr Xenia, Oh 45385

TIPS FOR YOUR NEWBORN:

  • AWAKE TIME: Keep baby awake for at least 60 mins prior to the session. This will ensure that baby will be nice and sleepy when we are ready to get started. (Bath time is a great way to get some wakeful time before heading to your session.)  Plan to feed your baby as soon as you arrive. This way we can get him/her full and sleepy before we begin.

  • BRING A PACIFIER: Even if your baby doesn't typically use one, it can help soothe them into poses and make the session run more smoothly.

  • TIMING: Please note that your session time will not be extended if baby is awake or fussy. We will continue with the session and capture what baby will allow in the time we have scheduled.

  • SIBLINGS: If young siblings are participating in the session, please note that their cooperation will determine the amount of variety in family and sibling shots. We will not attempt to pose a newborn alone with siblings who are too young to be reliable/predictable. Your baby's safety is our number one concern.

  • PRO-TIP: Please come prepared with activities to keep little ones busy while we finish the session with your newborn (we highly recommend avoiding screens leading up to the session because when it's time to take them away, it typically ends in a meltdown). We ask that children not run, jump, climb or otherwise disrupt the studio space. There is a private area in the back of our studio with a couch, coloring books and snacks. We ask that siblings wait here when their portion of the session is complete. A parent is also welcome to take siblings out for ice cream or to the park once we've completed the family/sibling portion of the session.

WHAT TO WEAR:

  • SAY YES TO: For parent and family shots, we encourage everyone to bring a cream, ivory or beige (or other muted earthy tone) top, dress or gown. For moms, anything dainty and lacy photographs beautifully.

  • AVOID: Please steer clear of blacks/reds and other dark/harsh colors. These create a color cast on baby and makes their skin look very red and unflattering in the photos.

  • STUDIO WARDROBE: We have several items in our studio wardrobe that moms (and even dads and small toddlers) are welcome to use as well. We've created an online catalog with all of our studio wardrobe items so clients can make their selections online and we can have it ready for you at your session.  Just take a screenshot of the item(s) you'd like and send them to us in an email.
