Lindsay’s Step by Step Styling Process + Tips & Tricks for the Perfect Session Look

  • Start with a couple of colors that you love that compliment each other. Try to stick to neutral, earthy or jewel tones and avoid harsh colors (neons! ew.) that will clash with skin tones. Your wardrobe email shows a great visual on “YES!” colors and “NO” colors and will help you get started.

  • First, start with mom (that’s probably you!) because if momma ain’t happy ain’t nobody happy! Decide on something you love, and that you feel beautiful in! It doesn’t necessarily need to be completely functional or comfortable… since you’ll only be wearing it for a short time …but it IS important that you LOVE it! That’s me up there in the grid (top row second photo).. That dress was WAY too long and the off the shoulder fit was a little wild so I had to keep adjusting it. But I LOVED the color, the texture and overall how flattering the fit was.. so while I’d never choose it to go out to dinner because of how long and annoying it was.. I give it an 11/10 as a photoshoot dress! Off the shoulder pieces are flattering on everyone while showing a little skin (but not too much boob) while simultaneously covering that upper arm! So if you’ve never given that a go, I’d highly suggest at least trying an off the shoulder style on and see how you feel about it.

  • Once you’ve got your outfit squared away then you can move onto the rest of the family. Feel free to use items you already have on hand and then mix and match those with new pieces if needed.

  • Be sure to use our complimentary online wardrobe styling service to help find pieces you love and to assist you in coordinating solids, patterns, and colors without having to stress! It’s also great for making accessory suggestions such as hats, beanies, suspenders, jackets, cardigans, necklaces, bracelets, earrings, baby bows, etc!

  • Speaking of accessories… they really up the wardrobe game and help add tons of visual interest to your photos. Adding layers and textures along with a few accessories will always take your wardrobe look to the next level!

  • Movement is high priority! Look for clothing that moves. I’m sure you’ve noticed that the vast majority of my momma clients wear maxi dresses. I recommend them for 3 reasons… 1. they are flattering on everyone 2. they create movement and visual interest in the photos that is otherwise missing if everyone is wearing pants 3. they are easy to stand, sit and squat in without showing off all your goods ;) Do you HAVE to wear a dress? Absolutely not. Feel free to wear whatever YOU feel good in!

  • For babies and little girls- consider a diaper cover or neutral/coordinating shorts underneath any dresses on little ones. We will be doing a lot of running, jumping, and swinging around and keeping a diaper/underwear out of the shot gets tough without a cover. Also keep in mind that clothing on small babies (under 12 months) can tend to be bulky and bunch up as you’re holding them so consider sizing down for a more fitted/flattering look.

  • Shoes. While I love a good barefoot sunset shoot..sometimes shoes make more sense for the overall session look and location. So if your shoes will be making a cameo in your session make sure everyone has them, that they fit, and that they MATCH the overall aesthetic of your wardrobe. Nothing kills a good wardrobe vibe more than sponge bob crocs :)

  • Shop early! Especially these days with low stock and delayed shipping times. Be sure to gather all of your session day clothing and accessories at least 4 weeks prior to your session date to allow for shipping turnarounds.

  • Always try stuff on BEFORE SHOOT DAY! You don’t know how many ‘SOS’ messages I’ve received over the years when it’s 3 hours til shoot time and someone’s something DOESN’T FIT! Don’t add this extra chaos to your session day. Try stuff on at least a week prior so you have time to pivot if needed.
